You are currently viewing Dark Kitchen? 7 Tips for Making It Brighter

Cavemen ate in dark caves, but it’s the 21st century so you shouldn’t have to, too!

If your kitchen suffers from minimal natural light exposure and always feels dreary, there are several easy ways to brighten up the space! Try out a few of these tips, and you’ll be saying “I see the light” all night long:

Brighten Your Bulbs

It may seem obvious, but changing the wattage on your light bulbs can help a lot.

Any bulbs below 60 watts aren’t doing your kitchen any justice. Try switching out your bulbs for 80 or 100 watts and instantly see a difference!

Mirror Mirror on the Wall, What’s the Brightest Room of All?

That’s right! Adding a mirror to your kitchen space instantly creates the illusion of light and space.

Whatever light is already existent in the room will be reflected back through the mirror making your space appear brighter.

Go Crazy With Color

Alright maybe not crazy, but adding pops of color is a surefire way to brighten a room.

Consider picking a bright, bold accent color and adding it to the space with decor such as vases, art, or curtains. You could even add a colorful backsplash or accent wall!

Lights Don’t Just Go on Ceilings…

Add under-cabinet lighting to brighten places that are usually the most shadowed.

This is especially true if your cabinets are darker in color. Plus, the lights are easily hidden so the room doesn’t feel more cluttered!

Reach for Reflective Surfaces

Reflective surfaces bounce back light, which is what you need to brighten a dark space.

Go for shiny metal accents for your cabinet handles, faucets, or sink basins. You could even purchase metal appliances such as a stainless steel fridge.

White Is Bright

They rhyme for a reason. White paint is a guaranteed way to brighten up a space.

If you aren’t ready to fully white-wash your kitchen, consider painting any dark cabinetry white. You could even add white tile floors!

Add a Splash of Light With a Backsplash!

A backsplash is the perfect way to incorporate some of these tips in a low-commitment way.

You could install a metal, mirror, glass, colorful, or white backsplash! Any of those would be sure to lighten up your kitchen.

There are many ways to brighten a kitchen and not all of them require an entire room remodeling. Incorporate a few of these tips into your kitchen design and let the light shine!
